SS-31 (elamipretide, D-Arg-2′6′-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH₂) is a cell-permeable, mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide from the Szeto-Schiller peptide family. It selectively concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane where it binds cardiolipin, stabilizing cristae architecture and protecting electron transport chain complexes. Preclinical research has studied its role in reducing mitochondrial ROS, improving ATP production, and protecting against ischemia-reperfusion injury. It is a key research tool in mitochondrial biology, aging, and cardiac research.
